One thing that Colorado is known for is its world renowned hiking trails and there is no better time to explore what our Rocky Muntains have to offer than in the Summer time! As the days grow longer, drier, and sunnier, it is time for Coloradoans to head to the hills to encounter the natural beauty of our state. Colorado offers a wealth of hiking opportunities, including pristine alpine lakes, rugged desert trails, and grassy green meadows. Living in Colorado features a variety of hiking trails, here are a few notable ones... Fort Collins Area- Just west of Fort Collins, you will find a great day hike that takes you up Grey Rock Mountain and back out through Grey Rock Meadow, providing panoramic views of the plains, mountains, and meadows that characterize our Colorado landscape. This hike is about seven miles round trip and is considered "moderate" in difficulty. To get there, drive seventeen miles west on Colorado Highway 14 out of Fort Collins through Poudre Canyon. The trail head will be on the left (south) side of the road. Boulder- One of the most popular areas to hike near Boulder is in Chautauqua, which offers a variety of different types of hikes for families, those looking for an easy day hike, and serious mountaineers seeking to summit a Flatiron. What's more, it is located right outside the city of Boulder, so it is easy to grab a great meal or an ice cream cone after your day trip! Follow Baseline Road west from the center of Boulder, and Chautauqua will be on your left-hand side just as the road starts to get hilly. From the parking lot, there are a number of trail heads, such as the relatively easy Mesa Trail, which traces the base of the stunning Flatirons for up to six miles one way. For more of a challenge, there are well-marked, challenging spurs that lead up to the tops of several of the Flatirons. Colorado Springs- For a longer hike, head to North Monument Creek Loop North of Colorado Springs. The fifteen-mile round trip, moderate hike is easily accessible, offering steep canyons, interesting rock formations, and views of Pikes Peak. Exit I-25 at Larkspur and head south on State Highway 18 to Palmer Lake. Take the main westward road to the old waterworks, where you will find a parking area and a trail head. Grand Junction- Head south of Grand Junction about 25 miles to access Rabbit Ear Trail. This is a 2.5 mile hike, climbing 700 feet to one of the most impressive vistas in the Grand Valley. The highest awe inspiring, panoramic view stretching from the Grand Mesa to the La Sal Moutains in Utah. Rocky Mountain National Park- The Twin Sisters Trailhead is located south of Estes Park on Highway 7. This seven mile roundtrip hike is short but has challenging trails offering hikers exceptional views of Longs Peak, Mt. Meeker and much of Rocky Mountains Continental Divide.
